Fan Hong Hua is native to Asia, parts of Africa, area from central India to the upstream of the Nile along the Middle East, and Ethiopia. It is an annual plant and 30 to 90 cm high. Its flowering is from June to July and fruiting from August to September. In China, it is commercially cultivated all over the country, mainly in Henan, Zhejiang, Sichuan and other places.

Fan Hong Hua contains high linoleic acid, which is able to lower blood lipids and serum cholesterol, soften and expand arteries, prevent atherosclerosis, increase blood circulation, regulate the heart and aged endocrine system. It can be used in skin care, cosmetics, weight loss, acne, arthritis, bodybuilding, diabetes, diet, muscle growth, hair loss.

Fan Hong Hua is widely used in Chinese herbal formulas. 1) Tao Hong Si Wu Tang combines Fan Hong Hua with Dang Gui, Chi Shao and Tao Ren. It is used in symptom management for amenorrhea. 2) Hong Hua San is formulated for postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis. Its ingredient herbs include Fan Hong Hua, He Ye, Pu Huang, Mu Dan Pi and more.
